Here are entered works dealing with persons appointed by the Pope to administer a diocese when its bishop is prohibited or prevented from exercising his office, or when a diocese is vacant and there is no chapter to elect a vicar capitular.
Since 1918 the term has been used for appointees to an administrature apostolic, a provisional form of diocese.
The term is also used for administrators appointed by the Pope to govern ecclesiastical institutions under similar circumstances.
